About HP Printers
In the digital sublimation industry, nearly 90% of printing equipment (such as Epson, Mutoh, and Mimaki) utilizes Piezoelectric printheads. These heads rely on electrical signals to change the shape of a piezo crystal, physically “squeezing” the ink out without generating any heat throughout the process.
In sharp contrast, HP utilizes its proprietary “Thermal Inkjet” technology.
Working Principle: A micro-heating element vaporizes the ink at over 300°C(572°F) in microseconds. The expanding vapor bubble creates pressure to eject a precise ink droplet, then collapses instantly to draw in fresh ink.
Key Advantages: Ultra-high nozzle density delivers superior precision and smoother color gradients (especially skin tones) compared to piezo tech. Plus, low-cost, user-replaceable printheads drastically lower maintenance costs and downtime.
Why must HP use customised dye-sublimation ink?
1. Preventing ‘pre-activation’:
Dye-sublimation dyes turn into a gaseous state when exposed to high temperatures. Standard inks do not heat up inside piezoelectric printheads, so this is not an issue; however, if they enter HP’s 300°C thermal inkjet printheads, the ink will vaporise and crystallise inside the printhead before it even reaches the paper. This leads to catastrophic printhead blockages. Consequently, custom inks must utilise dyes with high thermal stability.
2. Anti-‘Kogation’ Performance:
Due to repeated exposure to instantaneous temperatures of 300°C, the organic components in the ink are prone to charring on the surface of the heating elements, forming a carbonised layer resembling limescale (Kogation), which causes a precipitous decline in printhead lifespan. Custom ink must incorporate special anti-kogation additives.
3. Extremely high surface tension and viscosity control:
Thermal inkjet printheads rely on bubble collapse to draw ink back. The ink’s viscosity and surface tension must be maintained within an extremely narrow range; otherwise, bubbles may fail to collapse (resulting in ink starvation) or ink discharge may become uneven.
Under What Circumstances Do You Need Customized Dye Sublimation Ink?
Scenario 1: Industrial / Factory-Level Users (HP Stitch S300 / S500 / S1000 Owners)
Because original OEM inks are prohibitively expensive—especially for high-volume factories running night shifts with the S500 or ultra-wide formats with the S1000—they aggressively squeeze your profit margins. Alternatively, you may find that on certain specialized fabrics, the OEM ink’s black density or fluorescent performance falls short of your high-end global clients’ strict requirements.
⚠ When Customization is Critical:
- Chasing Maximum Cost-Efficiency: You need a high-quality, 100% compatible third-party, high-capacity ink bulk solution to perfectly replace original ink bags.
- Specialized Spot Color Customization: For high-end sportswear or home textiles, you require custom-tailored ICC profiles, or even bespoke formulations like Deep Black and specialized fluorescent inks.
Scenario 2: Overseas Consumer-Grade / DIY Conversion Users (OfficeJet / DeskJet / Smart Tank Players)
If you are a hobbyist or small business owner utilizing these machines, never grab standard generic sublimation ink to fill your desktop HP printer (such as the Smart Tank 515). Standard ink is designed for piezo printheads; if you fill a thermal HP printer with it, your machine will likely be ruined within a week due to the intense heat.
⚠ When Customization is Critical:
- Formulated Specifically for Converted Printers: You need a formulation optimized precisely for the thermal printhead lifespans of HP desktop machines.
- Custom Packaging & Fitments: Since converted printers require frequent refills, you need custom-designed ink bottles equipped with specialized needles or custom-fit caps (designed to lock seamlessly onto the Smart Tank ports for mess-free filling), along with plug-and-play ICC profiles.
Common Use Cases for HP Printers
To fit the specific characteristics of the HP market, commercial customized sublimation inks are primarily classified into three categories: equipment grade (industrial vs desktop conversion), packaging format (bags, cartridges, or bottles), and color performance (deep black or fluorescent).
